Self Defense
In contrast to Arrest Control Techniques, where the officer uses a degree of force to take a suspect into custody, in Self Defense, the officer uses defensive tactics to thwart a physical attack against the officer. It is important to understand the difference between the two.

In using Arrest Control Tactics the officer is relying on the authority given the officer by the law which gives the officer the probable cause to affect an arrest and the authority to use a reasonable amount of force to affect that arrest. In Self Defense the officer is relying on the ancient and inalienable right to life.

The Self Defensive Techniques in the Koga Method include more than just physical techniques but also the knowledge necessary to reduce incidents of attack on the officer, how to respond to an attack and finally, after overcoming the attack, how to take the attacker safely and humanely into custody. Thus, in the Koga Method, Self Defense Techniques go hand in hand with Arrest Control Techniques.
