High Risk Contact Response
On a regular basis a law enforcement officer engages in what is considered by many as “routine situations”. A pedestrian stop for jay walking; a vehicle stop for rolling through a stop sign; a search of a building where a burglary alarm has been activated. But no police action is routine.

Is that pedestrian jay walking because he is too lazy to go to the intersection or is his getaway vehicle on the other side of the street; did that driver just roll through the stop sign because he is in a hurry to get to his destination or is there a robbery call at the local stop and shop about to come out and this is the suspect fleeing; is that alarm faulty or are you about to check a building with an armed burglar still inside.

Any unknown risk stop can instantly turn into a high risk stop. The officer should always be prepared for the high risk situation while maintaining a low profile non aggressive stance.

How is an officer to accomplish this? It’s simple, training. The officer must be properly trained to recognize and handle high risk situations. Once an officer is comfortable with these situations the officer can enter unknown risk situations displaying a calm, personable demeanor confident is his or her ability to handle the situation should the risk elevate.

This is only accomplished through proper and adequate training. In conjunction with Arrest Control and Self Defense Techniques, High Risk Contact Response will prepare an officer to survive and properly handle high risk encounters in as safe and humane a manner as is humanly possible.
